Whole Body Vibration
The benefits of Whole Body Vibration (WBV) are many and include accelerated weight loss, increased energy and bone density, and decreased cellulite and varicose veins.
One of the most important benefits, however, is its ability to rejuvenate or cleanse the lymphatic system, our body’s “sewer” system.
WBV offers a low-impact way to increase strength and flexibility, rejuvenate your body, cleanse, promote fast weight loss and increase metabolism.
Vibration training causes your muscles to experience an involuntary contraction at the same rate that the platform is vibrating. This produces a stretch reflex in 100% of your muscles. This means your muscles react to the vibration by contracting and relaxing involuntarily. This burns as many calories in 10 minutes as a 5 mile run.
Vibration training also enhances rejuvenation by stimulating blood flow in the lymphatic system.
WBV to Lose Weight
A recent study showed that women who use whole body vibration lost more weight compared to those who did even longer exercise sessions on a treadmill. Of particular note was the accelerated weight loss was from around the abdominal area. This is important because weight gain around the abdominal area has been linked to cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
Perhaps most important was the fact that the group that did WBV was able to maintain their weight loss longer!
A study in the European Journal of Applied Physiology concluded WBV effectively reduced levels of cortisol in men. It increased both testosterone and human growth hormone levels. Whole Body Vibration also reduced cortisol and glucose levels while stimulating two thyroid hormones.
Can Whole Body Vibration Increase Bone Density?
Research has shown that WBV can increase bone mass. This is particularly important for postmenopausal women who want to prevent the loss of bone density due to hormonal changes. Postmenopausal women improved the bone density in their hips after six months of WBV therapy.
How Long Has Whole Body Vibration Been In Use?
WBV was invented to help Astronauts
WBV training was used in the 1960s by the Russian space program to help cosmonauts recover more quickly from muscle atrophy. Since then, Olympic athletes have adapted WBV into their workouts. Trainers and doctors have been using WBV for well over 40 years, too. Read more here, https://www.froothie.com/blog/the-real-science-behind-vibration-plates/
To sum it up, whole body vibration has been shown to help with everything from weight loss and balancing hormones to increasing bone density and improving muscle mass, but the most important reason we use it here at Platinum Wellness is to effectively cleanse the lymphatic system which again is our body’s sewer system.
This is critical as we try to eliminate toxins from the system to keep the weight off. Just 10 minutes of WBV has been shown to be roughly the equivalent of a 5 mile run both in calorie burning and and how it cleans out the lymphatic system.
It’s great for lubricating joints and people often will get relief from hip, knee and low back issues. Studies have also shown the benefits of whole body vibration for constipation as it tends to- shall we say- ‘get things moving’.
We definitely see this in our office at Platinum Wellness as patients tend to go from WBV straight to the restroom 🙂
