Unfortunately, there are as many as 20 factors that can cause thyroid problems, yet traditional thyroid replacement therapy only effectively treats one of them!

When you consider that your thyroid literally runs your metabolism, and every cell in your body has thyroid hormone receptors, even the slightest problem can wreak havoc in your body.

Interestingly enough, the majority of “thyroid problems” are not even a problem with your thyroid but rather your immune system!

Rather than going into all the details of how the thyroid works (e.g., T3, T4, TSH, etc., – the internet is full of great research) it’s important you understand the vast majority of things that can go wrong with this system are caused by nutrition and lifestyle.

For instance, food allergies, sensitivities, candida, leaky gut syndrome, environmental toxins, stress, hormone imbalances, digestive issues (acid reflux, bloating, etc.), and blood sugar issues can all cause thyroid problems.

The article explains correlation between gut bacteria and thyroid function and the connection between the gut and autoimmune disease like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.

Bottom line?

Yeast Can “Coat” Your Cells

Unfortunately, rarely, if ever, are any of these taken into account; so doctors are left to simply prescribe meds.

While this approach may help temporarily, it certainly doesn’t address the root cause of the problem and you’re left taking those medications indefinitely.

For example, many patients we see suffer from digestive issues they don’t even know they have such as an imbalance in the normal gut flora.

This can lead to candida, an overgrowth of yeast in the body.  This yeast can “coat” cells making it difficult for thyroid hormones to affect cells properly.  So, the symptoms of thyroid disease are present yet the thyroid itself is fine.

Eventually, gut imbalances can lead to a leaky gut syndrome which can cause autoimmune disease. Ironically, one of which is Hashimoto’s disease, where the immune system essentially attacks the thyroid.  In these examples solving the problem can be as simple as fixing the underlying gut issues.


Environmental Toxins & Your Thyroid

Environmental toxins can also play a role. You see, iodine happens to be something called a halogen, which elementally is very similar to some well-known toxins such as chlorine, fluorine, and bromine. These toxins are more common than ever – in drinking water, toothpaste, bread, etc.  So, instead of using iodine (which many people are deficient in today) to make thyroid hormone, the body uses what it has available – chlorine, fluorine, etc.  Your blood work may show your hormone levels are fine but do you suppose it functions in your body the same way if it’s made from a toxin as opposed to iodine?

Our approach is different.  We look at the cause of the problem.  We’re certainly not saying you should stop taking your medications, but what if you could at some point by fixing the source of the problem?  We think all doctors would agree, take medications if necessary of course, but if you could remove the source of the problem and decrease the need for them you’d be better off.
